PORTLAND (WGME) - - The Portland Green Independent committee is expected soon to propose  legalizing the possession of up to two and a half ounces of pot as well as possession of drug paraphernalia like pipes and bongs.

The group has started collecting signatures for a referendum that would ask residents if they was to legalize marijuana within the city limits.

Supporters have 80 days to gather 1,500 valid signatures.  If they do, the referendum could happen as soon as November.
